Memorial Day Weekend: Events!
With Memorial Day weekend ahead, there’s no shortage of activities going on around the city to honor our servicemen and women and to get together with the family. Explore town and have a safe and wonderful holiday!
Saturday, May 26
Memorial Day Service - Sgt. Charles A. MacGillivary Veterans Memorial Park, 11am
In the Back Bay Fens, beautiful memorials pay tribute to those who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Join in observing our service members at this lovely park, the 66th annual event held here.
Family Art Cart - Museum of Fine Arts, 10am – 4 pm
Kids ages 4 and up can explore the Museum of Fine Arts with a ton of activities, ranging from sketching to puzzle solving and other interactive materials. Found in the Shapiro Family Courtyard, the Family Art Cart is a great way to have fun and learn.
Get Out & Go Birding – Mass Audobon’s Boston Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, 10am – 4pm
Borrow a birding kit and search through your binoculars on a beautiful Saturday on this ornithological trek. The BNC will supply participants with a list of common birds to be found, as well as two pairs of binoculars and two bird guide books.
Patriotic Wand Making – Lakeshore Learning Stores (Saugus and Newton), 11am – 3pm
Stop in to the Lakeshore Learning stores to build a wand and get in the patriotic spirit of the weekend. A fun, free craft activity.
Oyster Shucking Lessons - Mercato del Mare, 1pm – 3pm
Mercato del Mare will teach you how to shuck oysters at “Shuck U,” supplying a shucking knife so you can tackle the molluscs on your own. Pay only for what you shuck and eat! A fun and tasty way to spend an afternoon.
Sunday, May 27
Somerville Memorial Day Parade - Somerville City Hall, 1pm
Following a wreath laying ceremony at 8am, the Memorial Day parade kicks off at 1pm, starting and City Hall and concluding at Veterans Memorial Cemetery, with a service to follow for Somerville veterans. Featuring 12 marching bands, fire, veteran, and police representatives, school groups, and more, the parade will go on rain or shine. Freedom Trail Tour for Children - Samuel Adams Statue at Faneuil Hall, 2pm – 3pm
Keeping kids in mind, this version of the Freedom Trail tour will teach them all about historic sites around Boston, covering ten areas.
All Hands on Deck: Memorial Day Weekend Family Fun – USS Constitution Museum, 9am – 6pm
Families can learn about the the USS Constitution and historical marine service in activities on board Old Ironsides. A new exploration activity called “Mutinous Expedition: A Quest Based on Honest Truth” will be featured as well; this event runs Friday, Saturday and Monday as well!
Monday, May 28
Sketching in the Salon – Museum of Fine Arts, 10am – 4pm
Part of the Museum of Fine Arts’ open house event all day Memorial Day, you can hang out in the Salon gallery and sketch. Get tips as well to help develop your artistic abilities!
Garden of Flags - Boston Common, all weekend
20,000 flags adorn the area in front of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument every year at Boston Common, planted by the Massachusetts Military Heroes organization. The flags can be observed all weekend long.
